In September 2012, after months of deliberating on whether or not to invest in a new hobby, I bought a £60 sewing machine from Lidl. Since then, my cheap little machine and I have made about a dozen or so of my own clothes, and now I'm totally in love with creating hand-made garments.
Sewing is my refuge from a full-time job that (whilst often inspiring and fulfilling) confronts me with negativity and ignorance on a day to day basis. It challenges my mainly soft-skilled brain to wrestle with technical problem solving, geometry, colour theory and attention to minute detail. Sewing is my creative outlet, an extra topic of conversation, a reason to go home rather than to the pub, my personal riposte to fast fashion, and a way to use my hands to make something tangible.
I'm a slow sewer, squeezing my projects around work, family and my social life. I'm entirely self taught, partially from books, but mostly from a vast swathe of incredible sewing blogs. My friends and family are supportive and interested, but I've been feeling the need to discuss and share my beloved hobby with other practitioners. There is so much I want to learn. So after lurking from afar for the last three years I thought it was time to join in.
